Presidents Message

With having the Bowls Night on a meeting night it feels like an age since our last meeting.  Or it might just be that I was looking after my grandsons and the puppy during that time while my son and daughter in law were away climbing a mountain.

I appreciate and thank the dedicated few from our club who turned up early in the morning on the following Friday to support World Polio Day. (please see report below)

Following are some dates that I urge you to block out in your diary.

Our Club Christmas Dinner and last meeting for 2021, will be on 16 December where we will enjoy 2 course Christmas dinner. John D’Anna will send out detail in due course. Please bring your partner or any other family and friends.

District 9640 Rotary Conference has been renamed District 9640 Rotary Expo.  It will be held on the 25th to 27th March 2022 in Tenterfield. These are even more fun if we can get a group from our club to attend. Accommodation books out very fast so if we can get an idea of numbers at the next meeting, we might be able to arrange accommodation at the same Hotel/Motel.

If you haven’t done so you might want to invite a guest to come along to hear our inspirational speaker this week. I can feel the tears already.

10 CENT TOM.  Tom Pirie was born May 2002, diagnosed with an intellectual impairment in his early years, Tom graduated from high school in 2020. Tom also had severe scoliosis making his spine the shape of an ‘S’, he underwent surgery in 2019 and now has 2 titanium rods running up the length of his spine.
Tom started collecting bottles and cans from his neighbours a few years ago, he found this a great way to connect and communicate with people whilst doing something he enjoyed.  Today people across Australia and internationally know him as 10 Cent Tom.
He decided once graduating from school that he wanted to turn his passion of recycling into a career. Tom has placed over 120 wheelie bins across the Gold Coast and all the money he receives from the bottles and cans is saved towards opening up his own 10 Cent Tom Recycling Depot and employing people with disabilities.

Our next meeting on Thursday 04 November will see another fabulous Guest Speaker attend and share their story with us.

We are very pleased to advise that Tom Pirie will be in attendance, though you may know him as 10 Cent Tom.

Born in 2002, Tom has faced and overcome a number of health issues.

Barefoot Bowls Recap

The barefoot bowls was held on Thursday 21 October and was a lovely evening, which was enjoyed by all.

There were 25 people who came along and boy did we have fun!

The invitation did say rain, hail or shine and a big thank you to all who came out in the rain.

The atmosphere was one of fun and laughter as everyone put their best bowling foot forward on the night.

It was a wonderful opportunity to get together in a casual setting and let our hair down while bringing out our competitive spirit, all in good fun though!

If you didn't make it stay tuned for our next Vocational/Social event and be sure you don't miss out.

Train Ride to End Polio - World Polio Day

The 2021 Rotary Train Ride to End Polio took place on Friday, 22 October.

This year some of our very keen club members met very early at the Helensvale Tram Station to help support and promote Rotary and the amazing things Rotary does including helping to eradicate Polio from the world.

It was a wonderful atmosphere filled with such excitement and enthusiasm by all Rotarians who attended and there were a lot of us! It was so great to see so many Rotarians coming together in such a way, the smiles were as huge as the hearts.

If you didn't get a chance to make it down there I strongly urge you all to put it in the diary for next year, it's a great feeling to be part of the Rotary family.

Thank you again to those Rotarians who braved the early morning and came along, you all looked fabulous!

A Letter from St Judes

Dear Viv and all at Rotary Club of Gold Coast,
Greetings from The School of St Jude, Arusha.

We hope this email finds you and your loved ones safe and well.

We are writing today with exciting news! One of our grateful students has written a letter to thank you for your generous donation.

With all the travel restrictions currently in place, mailing services are unfortunately no longer operating as efficiently as they used to. So, to minimise postage costs and to make sure the letter reaches you safely and on time, we have scanned and attached the letter for ease.

Above is a photo of the student that wrote the letter, Vivian.

Please enjoy reading the letter and share it with your family and friends. Continue keeping safe and well.

With best regards,
