President’s report – Meeting #8 – 18th October 2018

Another dynamic meeting thanks to 11 visitors and a great guest speaker again despite a disappointing small members turn up (15) chaired by Eddie K.

Many of us have been wondering why we have a small attendance despite good speakers which is disheartening to say the least especially for those who put a lot of effort into preparing the meetings. However an analysis of our membership reveals that out of 40 financial members, in the past 3 months:
  • 7 never/rarely attend
  • 8 rarely/occasionally attend
  • 4 have been/are away on holidays
That leaves 21 members potentially available to turn up at any given meeting. The average has been 16/18 lately! The lesson we can learn from this result is that we need more new members to fill the room, to make our meetings more vibrant, an average of 25/28 is a good number to aim for. Support our Membership Director Rowan in bringing more potential members to his attention.

We welcomed 10 visitors: Andrew Foskett and his lady friend Peta (by Sue F), Margie Prentice, Nathan (2nd time), Chris, Gary and Ian (by Eddie K), Helen (by John L), Harry our photographer extraordinaire (by Jill E) and Martin (patissier by Jenny B).

Our guest speakers for this week was Ryan Tuckwood from ISR. This is a multi-award winning sales training and business coaching organisation. ISR help business owners, entrepreneurs and sales professionals to increase their revenue through ethical sales training delivered through innovative SWISH training academy. These founders added Glen Richards, Steve Baxter and Andrew Banks from the Shark Tank to their Board in March 2018.

Last Friday Rowan, Melissa, David and I represented our Club at the Charter Dinner of the Varsity Lakes Rotary Club at Hotel CBD. The newest Rotary Club in Australia. 90 guests present from 23 Rotary Clubs. Congratulations Charter President Peter Childe-Freeman & Team.
Pride Of Workmanship is finally on this week on Thursday 1st November. The committee of Kathy H, Rowan J, Jennifer B and myself have put a lot of effort into making this a premium event and I ask all club members to give this community event a big support by turning up with partners, friends and potential members. We have selected 9 awardees and expect up to 80 attendees which promises to be an exciting evening.
All nominees will be presented with a Rotary Pride of Workmanship trophy. The aim is to encourage a much-needed pride in personal performance in the workplace and provide an excellent opportunity for our Rotary Club to promote its image, gain access to organisations for vocational visits and develop potential membership, whilst at the same time providing an avenue for small business to recognise individual effort.
Objectives of Pride of Workmanship Awards:
• To promote Vocational Service.
• To encourage Pride of Workmanship in all vocations.
• To provide employers with an opportunity to recognise employees who display the qualities worthy of an Award.
• To encourage favourable employer/employee relationships and a sense of community pride in individual achievement.
• To provide an opportunity for Rotary to be involved in the community, particularly the business community.

This is our programme until the end of the year:
  • Nov 15 - Tony Unicom - Project Boonyah
  • Nov 25 – Birthday Sunday Lunch on the deck at Indian restaurant, (see name below!)
  • Dec 6 - Christmas Party – Mark that date!
  • Dec 20 - Breakfast in the Garden and AGM
JUST FOR LAUGH: Hear about the new Indian restaurant called Karma?
There’s no menu: You get what you deserve!

Kind Regards

Facebook
FB continues to be a great way to connect with members and friends. Thanks to Jill (and Harry) who
take great pics for me to upload to share the numerous social events we both host and attend.

Technology
The Board continues to find ways to streamline our monthly meetings and to use our time as
productively as possible. To that end we have adopted the use of Zoom a form of web conferencing for
some of our meetings. It allows members to participate from their desk at work or at home without the
need to travel to a location to participate.
Till next time

YOUTH SERVICE DIRECTOR’S REPORT OCTOBER 2018
 ROTARY YOUTH DRIVER AWARENESS
President John D’Anna and Melissa Neilsen and I were part of the 6 volunteers on 12th October attending the programme at the Southport Community Centre.  Marymount College were the attendees and as usual exemplary in their participation and manners and demeanour.  It really is a pleasure to be associated with this school.

NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM
We are sponsoring Maeve Cairns and have invoiced her for $575.00.  Total cost is $3,150 for which we contributed half but she was lucky enough to get a scholarship from NYSF for $1000.  I have to follow up Kimberley Stratford – last year’s awardee who  still has $547.00 outstanding.

ROTARY YOUTH TRANSITION SEMINAR
This camp is for 16 – 18 year olds and is to be held in Tyalgum 3rd – 8=9th December.   Currently we do not have any candidates to sponsor.   It is a difficult time of the year as students are on school holidays.
I have advised that we would sponsor an “orphan” if required.
Cost $590 per awardee,

LOUIS ARMSTRONG JAZZ NIGHT
We had 13 from our Club make up 40 attendees at this fantastic evening of swing band and Herbie Armstrong.

BIRTHDAY DINNER
Hoping to organise a Birthday dinner in November – Chawki has suggested Indian at Sanctuary Cove.
