President’s report – Meeting #8 – 1st November 2018
PRIDE OF WORKMANSHIP AWARDS - Dinner at the Southport Golf Club
Fantastic evening, our Club presented awards to 8 worthy recipients representing 8 local businesses. All nominees were presented with a Rotary Pride of Workmanship glass trophy, each awardee gave us a short talk about their achievement. Congratulations to the awardees for a job well done.

Kathy raffled a cute Teddy Bear and raised $675 for the Drought Relief effort in Western Queensland. Well done

It was good to see a strong support from the Club with 23 members in attendance plus 49 guests.

A special thanks to Past President Kathy Hogan, and her team, for making this event possible and for being the MC for the evening, to Rob Ffrench who introduced and explained the concept behind Pride Of Workmanship and all the volunteers for their assistance. As President I did a short presentation about Rotary and about our Club.

Sunday 4th November Rowan, David, Phil and I represented our Club at a District Membership Retention Seminar with very interesting and entertaining keynote speakers. Here below is a summary of Mark Huddleston’s presentation:
  1. The following statistics show Rotary in Australia has a membership crisis –

  1. Mark’s top 5 reasons why more members are leaving than joining are:
    1. Rotary is no longer seen as relevant.
Our clubs are smaller, our members are older and less of us are working.
Our perceived capacity to network and serve our community has decreased.
  1. Ineffective external communication.
Our messaging is inconsistent, confusing, under resourced and often misdirected.
  1. The volunteering landscape has changed, but we have not changed our practices.
  2. We have become obsessed with processes, and not focused sufficiently on outcomes.  Ie Meeting-centric rather than Service-centric
  3. We’ve become comfortable and apathetic.
  1. Rotary’s most valuable resource is the time our members are prepared to give.
  2. Potential member groups are time-poor:
    1. Students – study + part-time jobs
    2. Younger professionals – establishing careers and job workloads
    3. Small business owners – working extended hours to survive
    4. Those with jobs and young families – balancing life demands
    5. Business executives – work and travel commitments
  3. Busy people don’t have a lot of time to give, so the time they give must be effective and productive – Are our meetings a productive and effective use of our volunteer’s time?
  4. Clubs attracting busy people focus on ‘Less Meeting – More Doing’
  5. Hands on projects attract younger members.

Facebook
FB continues to be a great way to connect with members and friends. Thanks to Jill (and Harry) who
take great pics for me to upload to share the numerous social events we both host and attend.

Technology
The Board continues to find ways to streamline our monthly meetings and to use our time as
productively as possible. To that end we have adopted the use of Zoom a form of web conferencing for
some of our meetings. It allows members to participate from their desk at work or at home without the
need to travel to a location to participate.
Till next time

Membership Director’s Report

Three upcoming opportunities to bring along a guest that you think has the potential to join us as a member of the best Rotary Club on the Gold Coast

This Thursday, 15 November -  Gold Coast Rotary Meeting (5.45pm for 6.15pm - Southport Golf Club)
Guest Speaker is Senior Constable Dave Alley with the Queensland Police Service’s Project Booyah. This program is designed to engage students and create pathways to school, further education or work. It provides a “second chance” for those young people who are disengaging, or have disengaged, from school. Project Booyah is helping young people develop necessary life skills to make sound decisions and better choices as well as bridging their disconnect with society.

Our newest member Tim Cayless will be inducted. Would be great to have a full house to welcome Tim to our Club and the Rotary family. To book email Chawki Gazal today @ chawki@akgaz.net

Thursday, 6 December - Gold Coast Rotary Christmas Meeting  (6pm for 6.30pm - Southport GC)
Christmas music, food and drink to celebrate that time of year. Wear a splash or two of red to add to the colour of the evening. All partners and guests especially welcome to help this celebration be one of the best of this year.
To book email Chawki Gazal by November 30 @ chawki@akgaz.net

Thursday, 20 December – President’s Breakfast in The Gardens and Gold Coast Rotary AGM
(8am  at The Gold Coast Regional Botanical Gardens, Benowa)
This annual social event (combined with a quick AGM) is the perfect way to finish off the Rotary calendar year.
This is a great chance to show potential members how work and play can be combined in a magnificent morning setting.
To book email Chawki Gazal  by December 14 @ chawki@akgaz.net

Pride of Workmanship Awards - by Kathy Hogan

I love the Pride of Workmanship Awards.  It is a happy event celebrating and recognising the outstanding contribution of some special employees. It also gives us the opportunity to connect with local business people and introduce them to Rotary and to our Club.
This year’s Pride of Workmanship Awards was no exception and I am sure all would agree it was a great night.
It takes the help of a many hands to bring an event together successfully and I would like to sincerely thank the following people who did a great job of helping to bring the event together. Carol and Lyn for looking after the front desk and I know at times it was challenging and Vivienne and Melissa did an excellent job as ushers showing our visitors to their tables.  Rob Ffrench did an outstanding job as presenter. Harry and Jill Ellis (paparazzi )David Baguley, Rowan Johnstone, Jennifer Bailey and our President John D’Anna all helped and to those who attended thank you.
Without the nominations we wouldn’t have an event at all so a very big thank you to all who put forward or organised nominations.
It was a lovely night and Geoff Prentice took home my Tambo Bear.
Kathy Hogan
