Presidents Message

It was great to be back at the Golf Club and to see all the happy faces, once seated and masks removed.  There really was a happy vibe in the room.  Eddie (Edward Klimkowitz) chaired the meeting with flair and professionalism.  Once again he somehow had multiple roles on the night. He introduced the guest speaker, Councillor Darren Taylor and then also gave the vote of thanks.
Councillor Taylors talk about his experience as a new councillor at the Gold Coast City Council was both down to earth and interesting.  He has a natural calmness about him. The meeting ended on a fun note with a very funny Sergeant session conducted by Andrew Csabi.

I am very much looking forward to Leah Henderson’s presentation about her RYLA experience and John Campbell and Kathryn Koch will update us on what is happening with YEP, ( Rotary Youth Exchange Program). On Youth, Barry Lane interviewed a young man for RYPEN on Saturday.  If you have someone that you would like to nominate you had better get in quick.

David sent out an email ‘Tools for Tonga’ last week with details on an excellent way to provide practical help to Tonga.  Since then I have come across an initiate in our District and I thought I would share it with you in case there are any members in our club who sew or know someone who would enjoy helping in this way. This really is another practical way for individuals to band together to help. If you are interested please reply to the email address link below.

Rotarians are joining forces to send much needed items to Tonga following the recent volcanic eruption and tsunami. In particular, kids clothing is needed. A couple of industrious Rotarians from our District are sewing simple dresses (adjustable for growing girls) and shorts that can either be worn under the dresses as the girl grows, or as school shorts for both boys and girls. If you are interested in helping to sew these items, please email sew4rotary@gmail.com  and we can give you more info and provide the patterns - which are simple to construct.
There is also a need for school items such as pens, pencils, exercise/colouring books, pencil sharpeners, coloured pencils, etc.

The District Expo is only one month away.  It is time to register ASAP if you haven’t already done so.  There are some excellent speakers lined up and on Sunday morning I’ll be heading to Bald Rock for a Champagne Breakfast. (Correction,  I am hoping to be able to get to the top to the champagne)  Please see Expo information and the link in article below.  We can look at car-pooling if anyone is interested.

Trivia will be back this Thursday, see you then.

Tools for Tonga - Tsunami

The Nerang Men’s Shed at Country Paradise Parklands  is manufacturing the Butterfly Shapes for Gold Coast Rotary's Art In the Bazaar project.

When David Baguley delivered sheets of marine ply for them to process, he was approached by their President Paul Lannen and asked whether
we could assist them with a project they had started to assist the Tongan tsunami victims.

With support of the Queen of Tonga, they have a container ready to be filled, a sponsor to pay for transport and people in Tonga ready to distribute contents.

They and other Men’s sheds on the Gold Coast
are collecting tools, fishing equipment,  and other items that families would have lost but are not covered by emergency relief.  They have also sourced larger items such as doors, boxes, etc.

They have asked for Rotary support to help fill
this container by 15 March and have temporary storage at Country Paradise Parklands.
They do not want any monetary support.

Do you have or know of any items that could be sent?  Paul's contact number is 044 766 7606
to arrange delivery or collection.
