Presidents Message

Our guest speaker for the first meeting in May was Roula Selinas - author, inspirational speaker and life coach. Roula‘s tenacity is evident as a double cancer survivor overcoming the odds, setbacks and complications to bounce back and thrive again. Roula was a finalist for Ms Australia International Qld 2022 and is passionate about raising awareness and reducing the stigma for mental health and suicide prevention.  Her book Stronger, You Can Overcome and Bounce Back from Adversity shares steps and techniques that are backed by science and research and proven to work.

The teams were ready and the competition running high for the Ramble on Sunday unfortunately it had to be postponed for one week due the huge amount of rain we had experienced all week.  This gives everyone more time to help fill that hamper or contribute to one of the teams.

Our Club has donated $2,000 for Cash Cards to go to flood affected people through the District Flood appeal.

Let me know if you would like to attend a fun Inner Wheel Fund Raiser in Support Of Rotary District 9640’s Flood Appeal. It will be assisting residents in Lismore, Coraki, Broadwater & Murwillumbah. The Entertainment is Roland Storm a Dynamic Performer From 6 O’clock Rock Days. Perhaps we could organise a table or two. See details below.

Still loving my Africa experience from a few years ago,  I am looking forward to our speaker at this week’s meeting Nate Taiaroa, Founder & Head Guide of  www.adventureoutloud.com.au . Nate is a keynote speaker, adventurer, and responsible tourism expert on a mission to make a difference in the world through adventure travel. Nate is incredibly passionate about Africa and has spent most of the past 14 years living, guiding, travelling, and volunteering across East Africa. His favourite destinations are Tanzania & Ethiopia. Nate is also extremely passionate about education and is proud to be the CEO of Adventure Out Loud, an African travel specialist who donates 50% of their profits to keep disadvantaged children in school.

Gold Coast Ramble - Postponed due to Weather

Unfortunatley due to the ongoing wet weather, the decision was made to postpone the Gold Coast Ramble until next Sunday 22 May from 9am to 11am at Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens.

The Good News
Our registered teams have already raised nearly $8K for Rizeup.  Another week and we might reach $10K, enough to furnish two homes for victims of domestic violence.

How can you assist:

1.  Help on day with set up, registrations, manning a couple of checkpoints, Botanical Bazaar Promotion (8 -10 persons)

2. We are assembling  gourmet hampers for the winning team and best costumed team. I would love to add  some extra special items - gift vouchers, restaurant voucher, fine wine, tickets to an event or theatre.  Happy to collect if you can organise.

3. There is still time to register a team and get some sponsors.  Or sponsor one of club members who is competing.  Go to https://gcramble-2022.raisely.com. and press Donate.

If you can assist with the above, please contact David Baguley at events@goldcoastrotary.org.au

The School of St Jude

You might have noticed that I mention ‘holistic education’ quite often and perhaps you’re wondering why.

Educational experts all over the world agree that a holistic education, one that aims to educate the whole student, is the way to go.

A holistic education is about more than classroom learning; it’s about giving students opportunities to pursue their passions, to challenge themselves, to think creatively, to move their bodies and to develop values for life.

Through holistic education, I believe our students will become the moral and intellectual leaders Tanzania needs to fight poverty.

In this month’s newsletter, read about some of the ways we’re working towards truly holistic education. Meet our student prefects and learn about how leadership is encouraged at St Jude’s.

Hear from staff mentors who guide extracurricular clubs, then join us on the sidelines at St Jude’s first interschool basketball tournament.
