President’s Message

Our July 4 Dinner Meeting - what a great way to start the new Rotary year!
53 people at the Southport Golf Club including 34 members, 1 honorary member and 13 guests.

A big welcome to Nev Davis, transferring from Mackay North RC to become our 51st member, inducted by District Governor Harry Bolton who joined us with his wife and Rotarian Shauna.

President Rajit Gupta and three fellow members of the Rotary Club of Faridabad Sanksar in Northern India joined us and presented Gold Coast Rotary Club Leaders, DG Harry and RC of Surfers Paradise President Adrian Smallacombe with gifts of friendship.
Treasurer and Executive Secretary David Baguley combined with Club Service Director Kate Kimmorley to give a snapshot of the Club’s Direction and projects for the year ahead.  Our July 18 meeting will be our “Programs and Projects” meeting to begin implementing our plans to make Gold Coast Rotary not only the biggest but most importantly the best Rotary Club on the Gold Coast. Hear what Club projects, fundraisers, events and programs you can get involved in and help make a real difference to the lives of  those we will be connecting with in 2019/20.

Our goals to achieve this includes;
  • Build on and strengthen our welcoming and friendly club environment and invite current and potential Rotarians, friends and family to join us at meetings and events.
  • Better encourage our members in service projects, meetings, vocational and social activities.
  • Continue to stage community events that raise the clubs profile and impactful causes, partnering with other Rotary clubs and other organisations wherever possible.
  • Develop future leaders for our club and our community
  • Attract and retain more active business people as members
  • Continue our support of Rotary’s Youth Development Programs and scholarships and build stronger and longer term links with recipients.

This edition also showcases our Handover Dinner held on June 20. Immediate Past President John D’Anna reports on what those in the room experienced, a wonderful way to celebrate the end of  a memorable year that saw increased membership, increased attendance of and engagement in meetings and events of members and guests and increased funds raised and distributed to many worthwhile projects.

I was researching through Rotary what assistance they need up there after the floods.  Quite a bit of money has been donated through RAWCS and the government has made a donation as well.

For some months now Rotary District 9550 has been providing assistance / support to the drought-stricken families living in the Shires of NW Queensland.  Where financial assistance is greatly appreciated, it became clear that the constant challenges were starting to take their toll on these people and simply providing monetary support, although welcomed, still left a gap and one which needed more than money to overcome.  The toughness that people on the land are known for, was now, not as obvious as they continued to face and battle the challenges which were present every hour of every day.  The recent devastating flooding has simply made a dire situation even worse with the constant reminders of their plight scattered across their paddocks in the form of dead cattle.

Rotary believes this gap, which is mainly mental in nature, could be partly addressed by making available someone who has been through the worst of times and has come out the other side more resilient and better able to manage those curved balls life keeps throwing at us.  Alan Hannaford is a family man and a grazier who has experienced floods, droughts and personal tragedy.

To achieve this they need to get Alan to the property’s front door and after so much rain this will be a challenge.  We will require a combination of 4-wheel drive and helicopter to get Alan to where he needs to go.  There are costs with all of this and we are looking at donating to this.

I don’t know about you but I want my food to be grown in my own country.  I will let you know what is decided.
