THURSDAY MAY 16 OUR SPEAKER IS DR. ROGER WELCH OAM LEADING GOLD COAST OPTHALMOLOGIST

His bio appears below

In 2017, Dr Roger Welch was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his work in implementing world-leading ophthalmology on the Gold Coast. Founder and principal of the state-of-the-art Vision Centre Gold Coast practice at Southport, the eye surgeon worked from a bus to save the sight of needy people in small outback communities.
For the past 23 years  at his own cost and working   from a surgically equipped  bus, Dr Welch and his staff have made regular charter flights to the Northern NSW town of Moree meeting the needs of patients there and from other communities of the rural Gwydir region.
On the Gold Coast he built the multi-million-dollar hi-tech ophthalmic Vision Centre Day Surgery offering leading edge eye surgery. Dr Welch also contributed to the introduction of eye surgical procedures including vitrectomy, along with landmark treatments for Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration and of course Cataracts removal.

I was researching through Rotary what assistance they need up there after the floods.  Quite a bit of money has been donated through RAWCS and the government has made a donation as well.

For some months now Rotary District 9550 has been providing assistance / support to the drought-stricken families living in the Shires of NW Queensland.  Where financial assistance is greatly appreciated, it became clear that the constant challenges were starting to take their toll on these people and simply providing monetary support, although welcomed, still left a gap and one which needed more than money to overcome.  The toughness that people on the land are known for, was now, not as obvious as they continued to face and battle the challenges which were present every hour of every day.  The recent devastating flooding has simply made a dire situation even worse with the constant reminders of their plight scattered across their paddocks in the form of dead cattle.

Rotary believes this gap, which is mainly mental in nature, could be partly addressed by making available someone who has been through the worst of times and has come out the other side more resilient and better able to manage those curved balls life keeps throwing at us.  Alan Hannaford is a family man and a grazier who has experienced floods, droughts and personal tragedy.

To achieve this they need to get Alan to the property’s front door and after so much rain this will be a challenge.  We will require a combination of 4-wheel drive and helicopter to get Alan to where he needs to go.  There are costs with all of this and we are looking at donating to this.

I don’t know about you but I want my food to be grown in my own country.  I will let you know what is decided.
