Presidents Message

Nearly the end of the Rotary year and it was lovely to have so many visitors with us for the first meeting in June and to see some face we haven’t seen for a while.  It was my pleasure to induct and welcome to our club Aaron Clarke.  Our Membership Chair, Glenn Wran, informed us that Aaron is our tenth new member this year.

The speaker was Dr. Peter Montgomery who is the husband of our very own Lynda Montgomery. (was he the draw card for all of our visitors I wonder?).  Peter is an Ophthalmologist who has been dedicated to caring for patients’ eyes in his Southport practice for the past 22 years. Peter has a wide-ranging practice including cataract surgery and management of glaucoma. His main interest is repairing eyelid malposition that occurs spontaneously or may occur after development on cancers of the eyelid. Peter discussed some of the eyelid conditions that can be repaired and showed us what to look out for / how to detect some serious tumours on the eye and eyelid. He had graphic images, in colour, which were hard to look at for some, me and Anne Gazal, whilst others were enthralled. There were lots of questions for Dr Montgomery at the end.

Our Quiz Master Alex is back and entertained us with a round of Trivia. The joker is still in play and only 9 cards are left.  Overall, it was another fun and enjoyable meeting.

Many of the Club members and partners enjoyed the quarterly Birthdays lunch that Chawki organised at the Kurrawa Surf Club.

Barry rallied the eager troops for another successful Bunnings BBQ. Marion organised a basket of goodies to raffle. This enabled us to have another fundraising avenue and also a table with Rotary information inside the entrance to the Bunnings store. At time of going to press the combined takings were $2,200, how good is that. And, you can’t buy the wonderful camaraderie we have.

Brad Sandilands, is the speaker this week. Bad is an Aged Care entry specialist and will talk about Aged Care and what is currently going on within the industry. We all at some stage will have to face having a loved one enter, one or all parts of care. It is a complicated and emotional time. Information is the key and knowing where to look and how to access what you are entitled too is half the battle.

The School of St Jude

Our Rotary Club has for many years been assisting The School of St Jude.

Before he started at The School of St Jude, Joshua’s future was uncertain. His only option for schooling was his local government school, where he studied in a large class, without enough stationery or textbooks.

He was at risk of dropping out of school after primary, like his parents. Now at St Jude’s, Joshua has a future full of opportunities at his fingertips.

Joshua is one of St Jude’s 1,800 students. Although he’s only in his third year of primary school, Joshua has already discovered a talent for public speaking and knows exactly what he’d like to be when he grows up – a pilot! With the gift of a St Jude’s education, I can see Joshua becoming a future leader in his family, community and country.

St Jude’s is now 20 years old, but our work providing free, quality education for students like Joshua is just beginning.
